During 2024, the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) put on three musicals in London, and showcased actors who were all teenagers and young adults between the ages of 11 and 23 who were cast during extensive auditions. Three different British lighting designers were responsible for the lighting design – two of whom we have already introduced: Jamie Platt, lighting designer for “Our House”, and Bethany Gupwell, lighting designer for “Catastrophe Bay”. Aaron J. Dootson concludes our interview series with “Into the Woods” from the pen of legendary musical composer Stephen Sondheim. Aaron, what have been the highlights of your career as a lighting designer up until now? Aaron J. Dootson: Firstly, the Off West End Award 2023 for my work as lighting designer on the play “The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me” at New Wimbledon Studios, and secondly the Chester Mystery Plays in 2023 at the famous Chester Cathedral, which was also featured in the FOCUS magazine of the Association for Lighting Production and Design (ALPD). In the second part of our series of interviews about London’s National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT), we talk to Bethany Gupwell about her work as lighting designer for Catastrophe Bay. The musical was the second production of NYMT’s three-part 2024 summer season and transported the audience to a fictional place populated by exotic characters from around the world. As with the other two musicals – Into the Woods and Our House – this production was realised entirely with young, non-professional performers aged between 11 and 23. The National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) in London has already won numerous awards for its musical theatre and musical productions. What makes it special is that the actors are all teenagers and young adults between the ages of 11 and 23 who are cast during extensive auditions. The list of famous graduates is long and ranges from Jessie J to Idris Elba and Jude Law. In the 2024 season, the NYMT performed three musicals: “Into the Woods”, “Catastrophe Bay”, and “Our House”. Three different lighting designers, who we’d like to introduce to you in a short series of interviews, were responsible for the lighting design. Our first interview is with Jamie Platt – the lighting designer of “Our House”. Jamie, how did you find your way into the theatre industry? Jamie Platt: As I suspect many do: I was very keen on theatre and drama at school, but really hated acting.
